Jaguar Shark

Yes, it's after Halloween. Yes, this is about our Halloween costumes.

If you polled 50 people, 4 of them knew who we were. That's how we roll, apparently. No one knew who we were last year either.

I take that back.

Cool people always know who we are.

This is a funny movie that you should know about. They wear red hats and chase after sea creatures. People die in this movie, so you know it is the real deal. You can even have the lovable characters made into babushka dolls.

"Babushka doll, a commonly misused name for Matryoshka doll" -Wikipedia

Even though I don't know the proper term for these nesting dolls, I am usually a stickler for details, which is why throwing on some blue shirts and red hats was not going to cut it. We hand dyed shirts and I made stencils for the Zissou monogram with freezer paper. If you've never made a freezer paper stencil, what are you waiting for?

Trace onto freezer paper

Exacto cut out the stencil, and iron it onto the shirt

Paint

Repeat this 4 times and voila!

If only I knew how to sing David Bowie songs in Portuguese

It's the most wonderful time of the year!

What's that you say? It's Monday and I never post on Mondays. Well, it is October and I kind of love October, so I wanted to recap our Halloween costume extravaganza from last year.

2004 - Mario Gang

My absolute favorite since not a single person recognized me

Complete with theme song music on my phone

We even stole a baby

Can't wait for this year!! Stay tuned.

Raising Ari-who?

This is it - the final Halloween themed post of 2011. It's been a fun month recounting all of our costumes from years past. Here is the list:

2004: Mario Gang
2006: Raphael and April
2008: Borat and Ali G
2009: Waldo and Carmen San Diego

What about those missing years you say? Gosh, you're so curious. 2005 I was Betty from the Flintstones. I made my costume from 1 piece of blue fabric, a black ribbon, and a shell using a glue gun. It was pretty sweet. Here is one of the only pictures.

2007 I was in NC and Yannos was in Philly. I didn't dress up. I actually don't even remember Halloween that year. I must have been busy graduating from grad school and planning a wedding. 2010 I was pregnant and throwing up like it was my job. When you spend your days puking your guts out - Halloween costumes are low priority. Onward to 2011! Drum-roll please...

The Princess is in Another Castle

Remember here when I said I preferred being a peasant over a princess? I guess I'm a giant liar. I would say the Halloween of 2004 was the most fun I ever had getting costumes together. This was the year that started my amazing goodwill luck. I said, "I need a poofy short sleeve pink princess dress" and my mom said, "Where are you going to find something like that!?" I walk into the Harrisonburg Virginia Goodwill and it is in the window. Perfect. Why did I need a pink princess dress? This is why.

"I like"

This is quite possibly my favorite costume so far. In 2008, Yannos was dying to go as Borat.

We typically coordinate costumes in some way, but we were having a hard time figuring out who I could be. Finally, we settled on Ali G...

Hard to find

In 2009, I was inspired by this comic...

I have to admit, it was a pretty lazy year. Yannos's costume was store bought, and all I needed was a red coat and hat. Slightly boring for preparation, but still fun for us.

Heroes In A Half Shell

The year was 2006. Yannos was living in Boston and I was on my 2nd clinical in Fishersville, VA. Where is that? Exactly. I walked into the local Goodwill on a mission to find a yellow jumpsuit. What did I find within 10 minutes? The clothing for Yannos's costume and a beige jumpsuit, which I dyed the perfect yellow. Accessories from CVS and a fun art project to make the neon microphone look a little more real and BAM...

Halloween: Spooooky!

With less than 5 weeks until Halloween, the next month of posts will be dedicated to my absolute favorite holiday! Spooky is our new favorite word thanks to this song in The Book of Mormon (which was hilarious). Halloween is very important to me, I mean strangely important to me. Let me explain. I have the misfortune of being born 4 days before the tax deadline to an accountant. To make it up to me, we always celebrated my half birthday, which is in October. These parties always ended up being Halloween themed; hence the creation of my strange obsession with all things Halloween.

Let's talk about my first Halloween party. What do most 4 year old girls want to be? A princess or a cute animal, maybe a cheerleader? Here's me at my first Halloween party.

Oh the scary teeth and long nails weren't enough. I also needed my face painted, just in case you didn't understand that witches are supposed to be scary AND ugly.

Although now witches apparently look like this...

But, back to me. I was a weird child. Say someone was going to be Belle from Beauty and the Beast. What would she wear?

Right, of course.

What did I want to wear?

Yes, the peasant outfit.

Cinderella?

Sure if I were a normal girl. But, I wanted to wear this outfit.

I think I just really wanted to wear an apron. Actually, this is all starting to make sense. I have been hinting for years that I want an apron and I still don't own one!

Update: I now own a lovely apron thanks to our friend, Mel. Maybe I'll be a peasant this year.
